Kirby's Puppy Diary

15th August 2005 Kirby's Gotcha Day
After a few days of great excitement Kirby’s Gotcha Day was here at last so Tim Loren and myself set off to Somerset at about 11.45 and arrived at Lyn’s Kirby’s Foster Mums house just after 2 o’clock.
Lyn greeted us at the front door with Kirby in her arms and right at that point I think all our hearts melted, we all went inside where Lyn handed Kirby straight to Loren.
Loren hugged Kirby and gave him a big kiss and to be honest I think Loren was a bit shell-shocked but I knew how happy she was feeling and I could see from her face it was LOVE.
Loren played with Kirby while Lyn told us all she could about him and what we could expect from Kirby while Tim and I filled in his adoption papers.
We all meet Lyn’s Westie Family called Will, Lucy and Ben and as we could not leave The Fluffter’s 3 for too long it was soon time to leave.
We all said our goodbyes but I have to admit I had a huge lump in my throat as we did because I remembered the times I had to say goodbye to my Foster dogs and wondered if I would ever hear about them again.
Tim carried Kirby to our car where we had a large high sided plastic box with a snugly base so Kirby would be comfortable we had secured the box the seat belt to ensure it could not move and then we set off home.
Kirby was so good he had a couple of little yips but then settled down to sleep while Loren stroked him. We stopped at a service station on the way home and Kirby woke up but again he was so good and just sat in the car on Loren’s lap.
We pulled up at home at about 4pm and decided that Tim and I would go in to see The Fluffters give them all a cuddle let them out for a pee and then let them meet their new Baby Brother.
As Tim stood in the garden with The Fluffter’s 3 I called Loren in from the car and told her to put Kirby straight into his crate the we let The Fluffters in to meet Kirby.
All went very well and all The Fluffter said hello very nicely and to our surprise very calmly after about 10 minutes we took Kirby from his crate and placed him on Tim’s lap and let The Fluffters take turns in saying hello to him.
Again it was all very smooth and everyone was very happy with a lot of tail wagging, licking and nose touching it was all very sweet and a lovely moment which I caught on camera which you can see in Kirby’s photo Album.
Next we decided that as Angel and Coney had gone back outside we would let Kaylie be the first to greet Kirby on the floor Kaylie bowed to Kirby which scared him and he ran away but apart from that Kaylie was very gentle and well behaved.
Then it was the turn of Angel and her tail did not stop wagging she followed Kirby about had a good look in his Ears and a sniff at his scar from his operation.
Coney said his hello’s again but hen decide all was ok and headed back to his blanket for a sleep
We could not believe how brave Kirby was being around such large dogs and we were very proud of The Fluffters 3 Samtastic behaviour towards Kirby.
I called Lyn to tell her how wonderfully well everything had gone and all about Kirby’s first half day with us.
We had made the decision to crate train Kirby before he had arrived with us but I have to admit it is the first time I have used a crate and despite reading up so much on crate training I was a little worried he would hate it.
Anyway after a fun packed day little Kirby was very tired and was out in his crate ready for bed for the first time we all said goodnight and left him shut the lounge door and went to bed ourselves.
Kirby barked and cried for about 3 or 4 minutes but then slept until gone 6am what a little star he was to be such a good boy on his first night with us.
I woke up at about 3.30am and I have to admit I panicked because I did not expect him to be so good and quite I had to really fight the little voice saying" Go on go down” but I had been told not to do this and decided the advice I had been given was the best.
Later when Loren woke up she told me she had woken up at 5 am and felt so scared she thought Kirby may have died because she though he would have made a fuss
Day 1
We all think Kirby is going to be a fast learner as he has been into the garden today and been to the toilet and also used his paper indoors a few times and he knows where the door is to go out also the sound the stairs make when some one is coming down and runs to greet who ever it is.
We put Kirby’s puppy collar on him today and he settled very quickly and took no notice of it at all after a few minutes.
He loves all the toys and does not find the large toys a problem at all. He has had visitors today and everyone thinks he is so very cute...And they would be right.
Day 2
Paper training is going well it can be a bit hit and miss at times but it is very early days yet. Kirby has a good appetite but would much rather steal food out of The big Fluffters bowls than his own!
He has a voice and he will use it especially if you tell him no he will answer back! Something we hope to but right but then I guess it is the terror in a Terrier.....
When I was taking the washing from the machine today I dropped a pair of Tim’s boxers and Kirby ran off with then and took them in to the middle of the lounge to his pile of toys.
AHHHHHHH these little antics make my early Morning well worth it. As Kirby has gone through each night with no problems I think it is only fair to get up when he wakes up as he has been in his crate all night.
We have a cuddly blanket in the crate plus Kirby’s food and water bowls and some paper for him to pee and poop on when he wakes up.
We have avoided toys as we use the crate for sleep and eat time only but it is left open all day and Kirby will take him self off to bed sometimes but not every time.
If he falls asleep else where we pick him up very gently without speaking to him and place him on hid blanket tell him he is a good boy and then close the crate door that way we can get on and do what ever it is we want to do and know he is safe.
So far Kirby has not resisted sleep times or bedtimes at all and just curled up and gone to sleep he has preferred to lay on the crate base a lot of the time instead of his blanket but so long as he is comfy.
You should see how happy he is to see us when he wakes up his little tail wags and he makes tiny little squeaky noises it is so sweet.
Kirby has a little bed which he quite likes but he seems to use it as a play area more than a bed he also like to dig in it which is fine by us.
Day 3
Kirby like the garden and has been out there today with Loren and Loren put one of his leads on for the first time today not that he liked it very much but as I told Loren he is still very young but at least being so small he is safe and not getting lost in our garden.
He likes to dig in the laws and roll about just like Angel...Opps now I will have two dirty faced wet muddy dogs in the Winter!
Kirby found if he jumped high enough today he could pull the tea towel off the front of the cooker and lay and chew it so here we go again learning what needs to be kept out of his way.
Kirby is learning that when Angel tells him no she means no! Kaylie has decided she is not going to look at Kirby at all and wants to ignore him totally she is a little scared of him so we need to work with this.
Kirby has far more respect for Coney and Coney is the one that gets the most tail wagging from Kirby, he is always so pleased to greet Coney and is far more gentle with him then he is with Angel.
We have to watch Kirby’s behaviour with The Fluffters and sometimes have to step in when we feel they have put up with enough from Kirby.
The Fluffters tolerance varies so much with Kirby at this stage Coney will not tell Kirby off at all while Angel will say when enough is enough and as for Kaylie well Kirby rarely even approaches her.
We thought Kaylie would be very maternal with Kirby but we got that wrong! Angel seems to be his guardian Angel and looks over him to check all is well.
Day 4
Kirby has a voice ok that is for sure he will bark at The Fluffters if he is not getting a reaction from them and also at us if we tell him no.
He really does take it all in and has settled so quickly we can’t believe it. He is a complete pleasure even when he is being a typical pup.
We have a blank canvas with Kirby and hope we will get it all right with him we have been warned to start as we mean to go on and not tolerate bad behaviour or let him get away with things because he is so small and cute.
We can see a small dog with a big dog attitude all ready so we hope he will learn a lot of how to conduct him self from The Fluffters as well.
Kirby's little blue bone name tag arrived today that Loren had ordered from our Vets surgery so Loren was very happy with that and Kirby took no notice of it at all when Loren added it to his collar . His Insurance details also arrived today as well.
Kirby had his second jab at our Vets today which upset him greatly he cried and cried even when the jab was all over and done with which was quite upsetting for us all but he will be able to go out of the house in a week or so for walkies which I am sure he will love.
Our Vet Surgery run a Puppy party for Pups up to the age of 12 weeks and Kirby will be joining in the fun next Tuesday. He will be the smallest pup there used to big dogs but not boisterous big pups!
I hope you will check out Kirby’s photo album as we have taken lots of photo’s and want to capture all his growing up which is something we did not have sadly with The Fluffters.
Day 5
Kirby seems to have taken a step backwards with his toilet training today but he has been a busy bee playing, having cuddles, eating and sleeping.
Kirby has been so much calmer with The Big Fluffters today and his nipping has also go a lot better he changes every day and takes everything in as he watches our every move.
I can see he has grown quite a bit in the 6 days he has been with us and he now weighs 2.2kg. He is eating James Wellbeloved Turkey and Rice Puppy kibble and he just loves it. He also enjoys the fishy bone shaped James treats.
Crate Training is going so well but I think Kirby is making it easy for us and just taken to it very quickly.
Day 6
Kirby had a real good start to the day up at 7am which is not bad at all and in fact he was woken up by Coney telling Tim and I to get out of bed!
He ate his Breakfast with The Big Fluffters and only tried to steal some food out of their bowls a few times.
Had his photo taken a few times and then on with the day.
Kirby has done all his toilet in the garden today apart from one pee which I missed he went to the door but I thought he was heading to sit under the table and of course he did not want to wait....AHHHH I need to be quicker!
More walking around the garden today with the Big Fluffter extending lead on which went very well and I took a film clip of the great walk...LOL
Day 7
Kirby has been testing us out Today and biting very hard the last few days we have been using a small tin filled with stones to bang on the ground startle him and then get his attention on something else such as a toy which was working well but Today he has decided to ignore the tin full stop!
He has also started barking for almost any reason at all and a very firm NO gets us no where we have started to ignore the behaviour and walk away which seems to be fine at the moment.
He is a clever little Dog and I think we will have to be very careful not to send him the incorrect message.
Of course he has had his very good moments today and has done ALL his Toilet in the garden.......Which is great but keeping his mind on the job at times can be very hard....LOL.
Day 8
The start of Today was not so good as Kirby had danced about in his poop in his crate first thing this Morning and was covered in poop! Baby wipes were not enough for this job so it was time for Kirby's first bath which he did not like very much.
He has had some very barky moments again Today but his nipping has got a lot better and he is leaning not to chase our trouser legs and bite our feet so he is getting there for one so young.
Kirby had a lovely time in the garden again today he loves to explore and dig in the gravel. I put a hook into the end of a long bamboo stick and added a toy to it which was great and kept Kirby very busy while I sat in a chair in the sunshine and just waved the stick about.
I had forgotten just how much you are on your toes with a pup about so while Kirby is busy putting on weight at 2.3KG I am very pleased to say I have shed a few pounds...
Kirby has had a lot of Blood in his Poop today so we are off to see our Vet This afternoon and hope it is nothing to serious. He had very bad Worms as a Pup and is due to be Wormed again on Thursday so that might be something to do with it.
We are having a sample of Kirby's poop checked out at our Vets to find the cause of the blood so fingers crossed it will be ok and we have also put Kirby on Canine i/d meat as James Wellbeloved was upsetting his Tum.
Day 9
Kirby has had a good day today but it has been very wet here and playing in the garden was a very wet and muddy time but noting seems to faze him well at least rain and mud!
Kirby found his BIG dog bark today when he was a little unsure and scared of an empty box which Tim had in the lounge and a carry bag full of bottles which I was getting ready in the kitchen for recycling which we found quite funny as he is so brave.
The new diet is great and made such a difference to his Tummy so fast but to be honest if someone else had told me how quickly things would get better i/d I am not sure I would have believed it.
Day 10
We had a good start to the day all be it a little early at 6am but Kirby had his first nights sleep in his crate without having a poop!
Loren had been out for the night last night so Kirby was glad to see her back home Today and Loren was looking forward to Kirby’s first walkies with The Fluffter Girlz.
As Kirby had his first Jabs so early his second jabs were all complete by last week and our Vet told us Today was the day he could go out and about other than our garden.
Tim Loren myself The Fluffters Girl’z and Kirby took the car and parked up just out side an entrance to our local woods where we all went for a lovely walk..
Well Kirby ran most of the way he took no notice of his lead at all just focused on The Girl’z and wanted so much to try to keep up with them..... bless him.
He sat in Heather for the first time and experienced puddles and mud along with his BIG Sisters! Kaylie set a bad example and showed Kirby just how dirty you can get when you are a white dog so we took a few shots of that which you will find in The Fluffters Muddy pic’s Album.
Each time Loren picked Kirby up to rest his little legs he squealed like he was in terrible pain to get back down and a fellow dog walker stopped to say Oh dear me what a noise to Kirby....LOL It was a real racket!
Well there was me worried about a Westie keeping up with his big Sisters once Kirby has had some training and can go off lead I don’t think we will have a problem there.
Day 11
Wow I think we have our own SUPER pup Kirby is so clever he takes everything in and has wonderful recall all ready. We click our fingers and call Kirby come and he does just that, we have been doing this from day one but the last couple of days he has really got to grips with it.
He is playing with his toys so much but we are avoiding rough tug of war type games as they were making him very over excited and he would nip at our hands very hard.
Tim and I cleaned out Loren's pool today to put away and we had the hose pipe out to wash down the ground sheet and pool and Kirby had a lovely time running through all the muddy water under the pool and where the ground sheet had been.
At one point I said to Tim can you imagine what someone would think if they called in on us to meet Kirby right now...poor little puppy look at him all filthy wet and muddy! But he had such a good time and to be honest we let his Big Sisters play in mud when they want to and he takes no time to put right again.
Kirby heard a plane in the sky today and just sat and listened to it and never got scared at all, however when Tim used a saw to cut some wood up he barked and barked at the noise even after Tim stopped and I picked Kirby up so he could have a look at the wood and saw he was still unsure.
Coney Angel and Kaylie are now telling Kirby when they have had enough of him and kirby will just back off and normally come running to one of his Humans in his pack. It takes a lot before The Big Flufffters will tell him off but Kirby lays and licks at their mouths and teeth as the growl at him!
Day 12
Kirby has been a little star today he enjoyed his woodland walk very much with K and A and went around the block with Coney on his walk and a little walk in the High Street to the Video store where he found a little Yorkie friend out with his Mum and Dad also getting a film.
Yesterday Kirby would not walk on his lead without C A and K but Today he has decided that walkies are great....LOL Maybe he just liked his new extending lead!
Day 13
Everything is going very well Kirby is growing and changing so fast but I have to admit getting it all right all the time with a Puppy is a worry.
Kirby is having a bit of a separation problem with me still but we hope this will improve as he spends longer periods of time with Tim and Loren.
Day 14
Kirby has been with us for two weeks today and it's B H Monday so we were all at home enjoying a wonderful sunny day.
Loren also took Kirby to our local park with a bag packed up for him with his water towel, toys and treats...LOL Bless it's like taking a young baby out and about!
He had a lovely time meeting and greeting lots of other children but Loren said he really liked one of her friends in particular and her friend just loved Kirby.
Day 15
We have just got Kirby's result from his test back he has Giardia which is a protozoan parasite that lives in the intestine of affected animals. He will start Treatment for 3 days as from Tomorrow and it should not take long to get him fit and well again.
Kirby weighed in at 2.7 KG Today so his weight is increasing nicely.
Day 17
Kirby is 12 weeks old Today and doing very well indeed. He went out for a road walk today with Coney and trotted along side Coney very well most of the time and is learning walking out and about ignoring my feet can be lots of fun.
Even if we are all together Kirby will always look for my feet and like to walk beside them I think he just feels safe there with my big feet!
He is still a little miffed if people walk straight passed him without stopping to say hello and bikes are still stared at while he sits on his bum!
Walking on the pavement on the main road with all the cars whizzing past is now a doodle for Kirby after him being quite scared of it a few days ago.
3rd Sep 2005
Today Tim and I took Kirby into Town to get him used to many sights and sounds which was a great idea but to walk from one end of the Town to the other with Kirby took what seemed like hours he was greatly admired and he enjoyed every moment.
He investigated our two local Pet shops and had a drink while he was there and decided the Pet shops were good places to visit full of wonderful smells.
We visited the Market and Kirby sat and watched stall holders dismantling their stalls and quite a few stall holders come over to meet him and say hello which had his little tail wagging so much it looked as if it was spinning in a circle.
5th Sep 2005
Kirby now weighs 3kg which we think is quite a good weight for his age and he enjoys his meals very much.
Kirby has become a little over fixated on me when we go out of the house which is a bit of a nightmare. He has to be near me all the time as he walks along or he gets very stressed and yips!
I had a chat with our Dog Trainer Today and she said it is very unusual for a dog of his age to behave in this manner and has given us some tips on how to deal with the problem.
Loren said that on this Mornings walk he could not wait to get back home and that he knew exactly where his house was as well!
Loren is going to take Kirby out on shorter walks with some nice treats to entice him a little and I am going to take him out on walkies empty handed of treats and also place him in his crate for very short periods of time through the day so he has less contact with me.
This is all very odd as we all take care of Kirby, feed and water him and play with him. It's all very flattering being loved so much by our new Puppy but we want this little chap to grow up without any insecurity problems.
7th Sep 2005
Kirby had to have another bath Today as he has the same nasty hobby as Angel which is digging up Cat poop in the garden! Not only did Kirby dig it up and roll in it but he brought it indoors and tried to roll in it on the carpet as well.........What a little stinker!
Today Kirby met a huge dog out on our walk and I have to admit I have no idea what breed he was he was very tall about the height of a Newfie with a curly coat jet black and shaped like an Airedale Terrier....I will ask next time I see his owner anyway Kirby was fine and showed no signs of being scared of the size of this dog at all but then he was very well behaved.
Next he meet a Newfie and a GSD but I had to pick Kirby up as I had never meet theses dogs before and they charged over to us out of no where which was a bit alarming followed on by their very apologetic owner.
The man explained the GSD was muzzled because the Newfie gets picked on by other dogs and was a whimp while the GSD would get very aggressive and step in to sort things out when her friend was getting picked on so we thought it best to keep Kirby at a safe distance which he did not like and wanted to get down and barked!
8th Sep 2005
Kirby has started to nip a lot less when he is playing and realising that when we let out a sharp "ouch" it hurts which is a real result because he was biting at us a lot.
As for Toilet training that is going backwards at the moment and he seems to pee where he wants but when we catch him we just pick him up and take him outside and hope the next few days he will catch on again.
Kirby met up with a pup just one week older than him Today a Cairn Terrier called Monty and his one year old Brother Alfie they all got on fine but Kirby was a lot smaller than Monty and when Monty barked at Kirby he backed away.
We walked along for a short distance together but it did not take very long before Kirby headed back to walk along side Kaylie and Angel.
10th Sep 2005
Kirby had a weigh in Today at our Vets and he is now 3.03 he is growing so fast way to fast...Slow down!
We had a lovely walk at the woods Today and Kirby went off lead again once we were in a safe area, he is still a little frustrated at not being able to go off with the Fluffters Girl's but it will not be long now. We all think he forgets he is just a little Puppy.
Kirby met a Flat Coat Today in the woods that had to come over to say hello it was just as well he was such a gentle dog because his owner was jogging and just jogged on and left his dog with me Loren and The Fluffters!
When the dog decided to leave us at great speed and catch up with his owner Kirby barked and barked and pulled on his lead as he wanted to run with the dog.
Kirby has now taken to Car travel very well we have taken him out in the car most days just a short trip so he gets used to it. We have got him to sit or lay in the space by my feet as this seems to be the safest place for now until he is big enough to fit into his car harness and seat belt clip.
Kirby is going to be in The Many Tears Calender for 2006 which raises much needed funds for all the dogs which need to be cared for by Many Tears here is a link to the page www.doggielove.co.uk
16th Sep 2005
Kirby is doing very well his toilet training is really coming on now and most times Kirby goes outside.
His nipping has much improved and he hardly nips at all now and understands it does not please us.
He is still very clingy with me and I am trying to distance myself a little but it is hard especially as I enjoy him being around me all the time.
29th September 2005
Well it has been a while since my last entry and I have a lot to catch up on so I think I will start with Toilet training Kirby is now fully house trained at 16 weeks which I don't think is bad at all but he did have his Brother and Sisters to learn from of course.
Kirby is still wetting and will soil his crate of a night time but we hope he will get the hang of things very soon.
Puppy Classes from Sep 20th to 25th Oct 2005
Well our first class was a nightmare I think that just about covers it???
Kirby barked and yipped from the very moment we entered the hall where the training took place.
He meet a few of the pup's that were in his class a very pretty Border Collie called Gizmo, a beautiful Retriever called Rowan who was Loren's favourite and a couple of black Lab's and then it was time to start.
I sat up on the stage right out of the way so Kirby could not see me because he does not like to be separated from me and Loren really wanted to train him so we thought it was a good idea.
Kirby was very stressed and found it very hard to concentrate on anything at all and the fact he does not like going anywhere without The Big Fluffters did not help either.
About half way though the class Kirby and Loren were doing a recall session and Kirby made for the door he then pooped at the door and ran through the poop!
Loren grabbed his lead which unfortunately had also gone through the poop which in turn covered poor Loren in it as well
It was all over her hands and clothes
I had to step in and take over while Loren went to clean up bless her with the help of Hayley who helps at the classes.
By the time I took over Kirby had calmed down somewhat and did listen to me without barking
he did a good sit stay exercise and Kirby got a "well done Kirby" by our trainer as she passed an eye over him so that was good.
After the class had finished we all sat in a horse shoe shape and discussed our pup's behaviour and any problems we had.
During this time Kirby made friends with a Black Lab called Ollie, a Ridgeback called Sara and a Lab Grey hound x so it was all very friendly but he missed his Samoyed Family.
It looks like I might have to take over next week for the sake of the rest of the class. I think which is a shame as Loren was so looking forward to training her puppy.
Sally and Karen our Trainers told us maybe it will be better if I do the training for now and in time Kirby will calm down and be happy to work with anyone.
Oh well we will practise our homework and hope that next week will bring better things ![]()
I feel sad that Kirby's first class was so stressful for him but we will not give up or get disheartened it's very early day's yet ![]()
Second Class
Went quite well I took Kirby this time so he was a lot calmer and did not yip very much at all.
We arrived a little early so Kirby can have a social get together with a few pups before classes get started and Kirby really enjoys this.
He likes the bigger dogs without a doubt and this week Sara the Ridgeback, Ollie the black lab and Logan the Lab greyhound cross were still very much Kirby's pals...
He worked hard and so did I ...PHEW I was warned a Westie could be stuborn at times.
His recall this week was the best twice Kirby ran back to me off lead as fast as his little legs would carry him and he got a big laugh from everyone...
He is very funny when he is at top speed he's like a little rocket and can out run me NO problem.
He is sitting on command which he has been doing for weeks and I managed to get him to down as well which was imposible last week he just did not want to know.
I think Kirby will settle down in classes more each week at the moment he would rather play with the other pups than learn anything.
I have put our homework sheet out of reach as Angel decided to snack on last weeks and we will see how much Kirby can do by next week
As long as Kirby and I come away from the classes each week a little better trained then I am happy.
Oh yes NO poop's and piddles in class this week
3rd Training class
Kirby behaved so much better this week but he loves to play with the other dogs and at one stage he had his head in Logan's mouth
Logan lives with Terriers so he is used to them and Kirby does not mind the fact Logan is 10 times his size at all
I trained Kirby again this week Loren did have a quick go but Kirby created and I had to take over.
I can see an improvement in Kirby at classes each week but he is finding the distance control hard to master as he wants to follow me all the time but I hope he will get it.
Kirby is still far more intrested in playing about than Training it's very hard work still to keep his attention once he thinks he would like to be doing something else! He even gives up on wanting to eat his snacks at Training once he has had enough
It is a very late night for Kirby he is normally in his crate fast asleep by 9pm for the whole night and we do not get in until after 9.30 and he is always sooooooooo tired.
There are 3 weeks left to run on this course so maybe Kirby will improve a little more and be able to show off his new skills at the end.
4th Training Class
Loren took Kirby this week as I was unwell and she was very happy and said Kirby was so well behaved and did whatever she asked of him apart from the emergency down which he would not do for the Trainers either
Loren really wanted to train Kirby in the beginning so as long as Kirby behaves she will be able to take Kirby to the last two weeks of his six week course.
The Dog Warden came along to class and gave a talk out about Dog ownership and the law and also handed out dog ownership and law paperwork and poop bags.
We will see how the next couple of weeks go and then Loren can decide if she would like to carry on Training with Kirby with the older dogs in the next class.
5th Class
Sadly this week did not go well at all poor Loren was quite upset by the time she got home and told me Kirby played up and would not do a single thing she asked.
Lets hope that next week he will put on a better show as it will be his last puppy class.
6th Class
Well Kirby has finished his 6 week basic Puppy classes and I am pleased to say Loren left the class with a smile this week as Kirby was very good for her.
I wanted to watch them in action at the last class but I have had Flu and was not able to attend
still Loren and Kirby got their Certificate which is a nice keepsake.
We have decided not to take Kirby to any more classes at this stage and try to train him ourselves we have been told a Westie is a lot less trouble to train than a Samoyed so we should be ok.
Taking Kirby to Puppy classes was a good experience for us all and not one we had the chance to do with K A or Cone so it was quite special to us.
We hope Kirby will stay the very sociable little thing he is with all people and dogs he meets in the future just like his Brother and Sisters as that is so very important to us.
Loren grabbed his lead which unfortunately had also gone through the poop which in turn covered poor Loren in it as well It was all over her hands and clothes
17th October 2005
Kirby has now been dry and clean in his crate for the past 5 nights he is now 18 weeks and 4 days old.
29th October 2005
Kirby has grown so very quickly and will be 6 Months old in a couple of Weeks which I can hardly believe, he has come on in leaps and bounds and is been such a pleasure to have about.
Angel was as close as I got to having a little lap dog and still is when she wants to but Kirby loves to lay about on my lap and snuggle up which I have to say I really enjoy.
I have said before that somtimes I forget he is such a young Puppy as he is so easy to please very content and well behaved....He has great role models in Coney Angel and Kaylie......most of the time anyway!
I did have my worries about Kirby being around Coney but he has always shown Coney respect and seems to know he must not bother Coney to much.
I have to say that my Family have often said we would not be without a Sammy in our lives but I have to say the same of the Westie already.
Remember remember the 5th November 2005!
How can we forget? AAAHHHHHHHHHHHH I hate this time of year
Kirby has coped quite well with the Fireworks really despite the fact Angel goes bonkers every time she hears one go off and Kirby now thinks it's the done thing to tell the naughty fireworks off!
Getting all The Fluffters out in the garden for a Pee over the last couple of nights once it is dark has been very difficult with all the noise and sky lighting up.
Kaylie either hides away or is sitting almost attached to one of the Family with her big paws at the ready to swipe you one if you dare take you hand off of her and Coney could not care less and just sleeps bless him.
The Many Tears Calender arrived Today which Kirby features in along with lots of lovely Rescue dogs all from Many Tears.
You can buy one at the link below if you would like to help support Many Tears Resuce in their good works www.doggielove.co.uk
8th Nov 2005
Kirby has stayed clean and dry of a night time in his crate now since 17th September so I think he has finally got it...I think the mistake I made was that he had to much room in his crate when he was tiny.
I had read that you should section off part of the crate but to be honest I have never used a crate before and I wanted him to have as much space as possible.
Kirby does not use his crate as a den or a place to rest or play at all as I thought he might it never happened so I guess he does not like it that much anyway.

Poor Kirby got set upon Today by a Carin Terrier while we were walking in the woods! All The Fluffters were off lead but as I could see the Cairn's were heading for us I put Kirby back on his lead.
The older of the two Cairns headed for Kirby at great speed and snapped and snarled at Kirby so I grabbed Kirby up in my arms and walked on.
The Cairn then ran after Kaylie and Angel for a moment but then turned back to have another go at Kirby so once again I picked him up to keep him away from the Cairn.
A safe distance away or so I thought and Kirby walking again I hear a voice shout the dogs name and sure enough there it was again for the third time back for Kirby and this time almost had Kirby on his back before I stepped in again!
And then I am told if I wait she will lead the dog!
In my opinion Kirby is too young to be left to stand his ground with a badly behaved dog and I really don't think he should have to anyway.

We have always taken Kirby over to our Vets surgery regularly to have him weighed and just so he gets used to the place. Loren and I took him over Today with Kaylie and Angel and he could not get in the door fast enough...
As soon as we turn into the road where our Vet is he pulls at the lead to get there as fast as possible one thinks it might have something to do with being given a treat at the desk!.
Last week our Vet came into the waiting room to say hello and Kirby got so excited he wet on the floor...OOPPS accidents will happen!

Kirby had his first trip out Today on the back seat of our car wearing his puppy car harness and saftey belt he seemed to like sitting on the back seat very much and did not make a fuss at all.
However when I put the harness on him before we got into the car he sat down and made out he could not walk as he was not used to the harness! I think I should have put it on him a few times before our first trip but once in the car he was fine.

Kirby learnt a new trick Today which was to catch a ball when it's thrown to him he loves all ball games and especially with the new soft vinyl balls he has got from Asda as they squeak!
When he gets the new ball out of the shopping bag he squeaks it non stop for about 3 hours....LOL....Pass the Ear plugs! Getting a new ball when you are a almost 8 Month old Westie is so very exciting you know!
Strangely he does not try to remove the squeakers not sure if that is a good thing or not at this stage..LOL

OH DEAR Kirby has realised he can HOWL......OH BOY It all started yesterday as Tim and I were packing his case to go away when Angel barked at something in the garden from the patio window Kirby flew down the stairs and then we heard a sound we had not heard before!
We both looked at each other and both said "what was that?" and laughed it was a kinda half hearted howl but followed by two more proper howls!
Later in the day I had to take Coney to see our Vet for an Insulin jab and left Kirby at home with Loren and Kirby was very upset I had not taken him and sat on the stairs and howled I hope this will not become a habit!

24th March 2006
Kirby is 9 Months old Today his growth now seems to be slowing up now.
Each Morning as Tim gets out of bed Kirby gets out of his bed and joins me in mine, he is so sweet and very calm when he comes for his Morning cuddle and in fact sometimes I wake up and there he is all snuggled up to me and totally relaxed.
When I wake up he looks at my eyes real close and then licks my eyelashes! Not sure why but he has always done that then he checks my Ears to see if my Ear plugs are still in...LOL Once I remove the ear plugs and my feet hit the floor that is when he gets really excited. Then we head off downsatirs and he says hello to the BIG Fluffters one by one.
He also still really likes to sit on my lap until he feels a bit too warm normally but I love it and find it very therapeutic and hope he does not grow out of being so cuddly!
Kirby still loves his walks he can't seem to get enough and he likes nothing better than to get back from a walk at the woods with Angel and Kaylie and then take Coney Bear straight out after that and then he still keeps going....Wow he has so much energy.
